Winners of Icelandic Literary Prize announced

I know that Gerdur Kristný participated in the poetry festival in Maastricht last October and therefore I wanted to share with you the wonderful news that Gerdur Kristný’s book of poetry Bloodhoof has been awarded the Icelandic literature award in the category of fiction/poetry.

Bloofhoofattracted instant attention upon its release, and was well-received by critics and readers alike. The work is based on Lay of Skírnir, an narrative poem from the Poetic Edda. The original lay relates how the fertility god Freyr becomes infatuated with a giantess named Gerður Gymisdóttir, and sends his lackey Skírnir to abduct her. Gerður Kristný retells the story from the viewpoint of her abducted namesake, and extends the narrative beyond the end of the original. Bloodhoof is Gerður Kristný's fourth book of poetry.

'Eyewear is very glad to welcome Dutch poet Hans van de Waarsenburg (pictured) to these pages this rainy Friday in London. He was born in Helmond in1943 and published his first collection of poems, Gedichten (Poems), in 1965. His collection De vergrijzing (The graying) was awarded the prestigious Jan Campert Prize for Poetry in 1973. In March 2004 he received the first Municipal Award of the Helmond Town Council for his entire work. Between 1997 and 2000 he was chairman of the PEN Centre of the Netherlands.'

NUAGES - LANDSCHAPPEN

Op 2 januari jl. was het precies 10 jaar geleden dat de schilder Pierre van Soest overleed. Tijdens zijn grote overzichtstentoonstelling in het Museum van Bommel van Dam te Venlo (2010) raakte ik erg onder de indruk van zijn reeks NUAGES - LANDSCHAPPEN die Pierre van Soest in 1996 voltooide. Ik heb drie schilderijen uitgezocht en er gedichten bijgeschreven. De Banholtse drukker en uitgever Hans van Eijk heeft ze gezet uit de letter Diethelm-Antiqua en er een fraaie Nieuwjaarsuitgave van gemaakt.

SOIRÉE ARTISTIQUE EN PORTRAIT V

Vijf Maastrichtse kunstenaars portretteren vijf componisten en vijf dichters

Tot en met 26 februari zijn componisten en dichters te bewonderen in de expositie Soirée Artistique en Portrait in boekhandel Selexyz Dominicanen te Maastricht.
In het kader van het project Soirée Artistique Maastricht ( zondag 9 januari a.s.) kregen een vijftal Maastrichtse kunstenaars opdracht om portretten te maken van Maastrichtse dichters en componisten. De deelnemende kunstenaars zijn:

• Clemens Maassen (Paul Hermans en Henri Dumont)
• José Aerts (Emma Crebolder en Carl Smulders)
• Anke Verhees (Frans Budé en Andrée Bonhomme)
• Annemiek Jongen (Hans van de Waarsenburg en Matty Niël) en
• Guido Mevis (Wiel Kusters en Robert Heppener).
